Safety re-crafted
Between us, we have everything we need to step into the future we desire.
We're on a quest to rally a diverse legion of individuals from across sectors, roles, and disciplines, to forge a collaborative force that will redefine and develop health and safety practices that work for everyone
What future are we shaping?
Suspending current states and looking beyond dysfunctional systems, we inquire the collective ambition that sits between us.
What strengths connect us?
Recognising the strengths and experiences within our community, we identify readily available pathways to usher in new practices and ways of working.
What matters to us right now?
Certain themes and issues demand our collective attention. Through dialogue we identify challenges that many seek to address, but only have part of the answer.

Event postponed, new date TBA
Safety Re-crafted builds your capability to create the change you desire.
The event gives you clarity in the changes you wish to see in your workplace, builds your ability to break down large and complex change aspirations into small and manageable steps, and connects you with a community of like minded people.
You choose the issues that we delve into, and we explore them to see how we can collaboratively enact positive change, starting today.
We break down these challenges into manageable micro-experiments, ready to be implemented in your workplace immediately.
The event is a gateway to a vibrant online community of like-minded practitioners ready to support each other. Whether you seek guidance on specific challenges, create a taskforce with people with similar challenges, or simply want to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, our online platform is at your fingertips.
How have people found it?
Participants find the day to be of almost therapeutic value - enabling people to (re-)connect with their vocational passion. It’s empowering, where you will realise what you can achieve, without needing permission first.
One participant told us “it’s like getting the keys to a powerful change vehicle”.
We have been told that ‘this is exactly what the industry needs right now’ because it focuses on a positive future, and the tangible things we can do right now in our workplaces to bring this to life.
National level support for Safety Re-crafted
Thank you NZISM, CHASNZ, Safer Farms, ShopCare, Vic Uni, HFESNZ for seeing the potential in the people who work in H&S, and the community building meaningful change.
Thank you also to Z Energy and NZ Post for supporting events.
About the event
At the Safety Re-crafted event you will:
Create a positive future for H&S that is meaningful to you and learn how similar they are too those of others, and how we can support each other to bring this to life right now
Explore issues you are interested in and that affect you with like minded people
Break these bigger issues down into small, tangible initiatives (micro experiments) you can take back to your workplace and implement right now
Connect, share, and learn with your peers across sectors and parts of the country
‘This reconnected me with my passion for H&S, why I originally got involved in it’
‘It’s good to get tangible about what we can actually do to make change right now’
About the online community
The community is available anytime. Currently 50 people are on an online platform called Hive. This number is growing, and includes influential people willing to give their support.
The community enables you to:
Ask for help on specific needs (eg finding Compliance Certifiers locally; where to go to learn about drones)
Ask for support to create changes (eg who else has made 4 year H&S strategies; how can we redesign the way we do subcontractor management)
Share what you have learnt in your own micro-experiments
Meet new people each month (Coffee Connect each month)
Set up your own community of interest (eg understanding more about AI and H&S)
Support others with your knowledge and experience by responding to their asks for help and support
‘The platform is a great way to get the help I need, when I need it’
‘This approach saved me countless hours of research that I don’t have time for, by discussing a problem directly with people have have been through it already’
Be inspired. Join in.
Come along to Safety Re-crafted, create a more positive sense of where H&S can go, start creating initiatives you can run in your organisation right now.
Join the community, access the support of your peers, and offer your skills and wisdom in return.
As several people have told us: This is exactly what the industry needs right now.

Have you ever felt that changing the way health & safety is managed is just too big or hard? Or you just don’t know where to start?
That's where a micro-experiment is useful.
They move you from being frustrated and disempowered, to thinking creatively and planning specific things to do right now.
What is a micro-experiment?
A micro experiment is a way of making a change so small you can start it easily without needing lots of permission and project management, but big enough to learn from and create buy-in for further change.
What happens in each session?
We co-design micro experiments that you can take away and put into practice in your organisation straight away.
We begin by exploring the way we wish our chosen subject would be. We imagine a time when it’s running how we’d like it to, and then think about who is doing what with who, what’s happening and what is not.
We then take different aspects of this desired future, and explore many different ways of bringing it to life, and ways to learn whether it is actually of value.
What does this looks like in practice?
Our recent session on Policies & Procedures began with a discussion about how they are not interesting or engaging, don't reflect what matters the most to people, are time consuming to update, aren't used.... There are so many problems.
We explored how workers could contribute better knowledge, different media to use, and challenging what parts of operations actually needed a procedure in the first place.
By the end of the session, though, we had a set of ideas that are easy to try, with a test for each to assess value. See the image at the top for a micro experiment we created in this session.
How have people found it?
Participants have really enjoyed the discussions, learnt from other participants new ways to understand the topic, and found new ways to create changes in their workplaces.
People are also now trying micro-experiments as a method to create momentum and change in their own organisation.
Our next sessions
These are focused on:
Risk Assessments - how can we move from compliance documents into a tool that helps us to improve the way that work is done?
Policies & Procedures - how can we turn long documents and rules into meaningful prompts that guide the work we do?
Post event response - how can we connect and communicate with our teams following an event, to ensure they have the support they need?
Toolbox talks - how can we create meaningful engagement and participation around the things that matter?
The sessions are online, 90 minutes, and connect you with others to build your understanding of the subject, context and issues.
The sessions are lead by seasoned health & safety innovators Daniel Hummerdal and Rob Cousins. You can also drop us a line if there’s a subject you’d love to have a session run around. Times available on request.
